We Love Our Volunteers!
Our volunteer advocates are such an essential piece of the work that we do. SMRC currently has close to a 50-strong team of volunteers. And we want YOU, too! We ask all of our volunteers to participate in our FREE Advocate Training Program which certifies people to work with victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in the state of Colorado. We offer three advocate training sessions annually.
About the Training
Our Advocate Training is a 40-hour comprehensive program where participants delve into learning about advocacy, counseling strategies, social work, child advocacy, the legal system, law enforcement and other issues surrounding domestic violence and sexual assault. We bring in the experts in our region to present on various topics and to speak to how our agencies collaborate to end domestic and sexual violence in our communities.
When & Where
Each year, we host two training sessions in Telluride and one in the West End (in either Norwood or Nucla).
Once you become a certified victim advocate, there is no time commitment required for volunteering. You can volunteer as much or as little as you would like. We are grateful for any and all help we get. We provide the FREE education and believe that the more people who become educated on these issues, the more clearly we embody to our mission.
Further your education: You will receive a solid introduction to several fields, including social work, law enforcement, counseling, and the legal system. It is a great way to continue your education and investigate fields you may want to pursue.
Get Involved in Your Community: It happens here, too! We are working to create a community in which people are truly educated and available to help those in need. There is a progressive network of agencies and individuals that assist people who are faced with violence in their lives. By participating in this training, you can help to break down the myths that exist around sexual assault and domestic violence.
One Person at a Time: You will make a huge difference in individual lives by being a good listener who is trained to know the resources available in our community.
